Jar Jar Binks is a character who first appears in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. He is a Gungan, a humanoid amphibian native to the planet Naboo. Exiled from his home city of Otoh Gunga due to his clumsiness, Jar Jar encounters Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi.
He becomes indebted to the Jedi and reluctantly agrees to guide them through Naboo's underwater core. Jar Jar's journey takes him out of the swamp and brings him through many locations in the movie.
Jar Jar Binks plays a crucial role in the film, eventually leading the Jedi to the Gungan army and inadvertently helping to unite the Gungans and the Naboo people against the Trade Federation invasion. He is often viewed as a source of comic relief but also a controversial figure within the Star Wars fanbase.
